Baby Naming Ceremonies

What is a Baby Naming Ceremony?

A Baby Naming Ceremony, often referred to as a Name Giving Ceremony, is a celebration of a new born, welcoming the child into the community and the world. It must be understood that it is not a christening or baptism.

Often parents choose to have a Baby Naming Celebration for their child and allow the child to choose their religion later in life. A Naming Ceremony is often performed when the baby is around 3 months old, however on the child’s 1st birthday is very popular and some are conducted for children over the age of 5. The timing is your choice.

Godparents (often referred to as Guardians or Mentors) may be appointed. Such a ceremony heightens the role of the parent and strengthens the bond between family and close friends.

Baby Naming Ceremonies include:

  • Introduction and welcome to guests
  • Responsibilities outlined for Parents and Godparents
  • Parents & Godparents commitment to the child
  • Inclusion of Grandparents
  • Poems and readings (can be read by Celebrant, parent or any guest)
  • Candle lighting (if desired)
  • Certificate for the Baby, Godparents (Mentors or Guardians)
    & Grandparents (if desired)
  • Signing of a Baby Naming Register
